Technical and Historical Notes

Developed by the Federation's SNRI branch, the XM-X2 Crossbone Gundam X-2 actually began its life as the Gundam F97. As part of an under-the-table deal, SNRI gave three such F97 units to Berah Ronah's (aka Cecily Fairchild) Crossbone Vanguard for use against the shadowy Jupiter Empire. Designed to operate within Jupiter's immense gravity well, the Crossbone Gundams use a set of X-shaped thrusters on their backs to put out incredible thrust. Due to the thrusters' flexible nature, the Gundams were also highly maneuverable as well. Focusing primarily on close combat, the Crossbone Gundams feature a number of weapons based on those used by the pirates of the seven seas in Earth's distant past. These weapons included the buster gun and the cutlass-like beam zanber, which could be combined into a powerful beam rifle called the zanbuster. Additionally, the Gundams' beam shields could also be used as punching daggers, leaving behind a distinctive X-shaped burn in whatever they struck. The rest of the Crossbone Gundams' armaments consisted of standard weapons such as vulcans and beam sabers. Their extra features included a special cloak treated with an anti-beam coating substance, allowing the Gundams to shrug off most standard beam rifle attacks.

The personal unit of Babylonia Conflict veteran Zabine Chareux, the Crossbone Gundam X-2 was identical to the X-1 in terms of performance. Its personalizations included a black and dark purple color scheme and a slightly different blade antenna on its forehead. Keeping with his usual combat methods, Zabine used a shot lancer as the X-2's main weapon; however, instead of firing the lance as in the past, he used it only as a melee weapon. Another weapon unique to the X-2 was the buster launcher, a long beam rifle good for sniping attacks. Though he nominally supported Berah Ronah as the Crossbone Vanguard's leader, Zabine chaffed under her leadership. Eventually, he betrayed the Vanguard, leaving them at the mercy of the Jupiter Empire as he defected. When Tobia Arronax was captured by the Empire shortly afterwards, he was put in an arena battle where he had to fight the X-2 with nothing more than an assault rifle. In this battle, the X-2 was piloted by Death Gale Team member Rosemarie. Using skill and ingenuity, Tobia managed to kick Rosemarie out of the cockpit and hijack the X-2. Ditching the Gundam itself, Tobia used the Core Fighter with a booster to get back to the Mother Vanguard. Stripped of its cockpit, the X-2 was overhauled by the Jupiter Empire into the XM-X2 (F97) Crossbone Gundam X-2 Kai.
